This icon is a print of Jesus Christ rendered in decoupage with modern techniques. It is made using a paper print over a wooden board with layers of acrylic red, black and three different tones of gold paint for the background, to reproduce the icon look. The printed image of the Virgin Mary has been repainted and decorated as in traditional Spanish imagery, intertwining various techniques resulting in a fusion of several art styles.
There is a tradition to add family jewelry to an icon according to the favors received. This kind of icon, is passed down from generation to generation and will accumulate precious jewelry during the years, sometimes the image is crowned. Since these jewelry are added later and not by the original painter, the crowns and the stones are disproportionate to the image of the saint. Based on these traditions, I have decorated this piece with flat back rhinestones.
